Floor

Fixed commercial venues will naturally have flooring and/or carpeting. The only addition you may need could be a dance floor, if not provided by the venue. Portable dance floors are available in either wooden panels or in inter-locking plastic panels, which are available in a variety of colours or a combination of colours. The wooden dance floors are definitely superior to the plastic. The wooden floors are not suitable for uneven surfaces, such as grass, whereas the plastics can cope with minor variations in the surface.

The set-up of dance floor for a function is most often in the centre of the venue, however, it can be placed to one side or where ever it is most suitable for the programme. Today’s modern dancing styles require less space overall. As a guide, one should allow one square meeting of dance floor area by couple. By way of example, 50 people on the dance floor at any one time will need approximately 25 square metres of dance floor.

As the dance floor is available in one square metre sections, one needs to work out the best dimension to suit the area available and the area required. The squarer the shape, the more practical the dance floor will be. For instance, a 20 square metre dance floor should be 4x5 m rather than 2x10 m.
